India

India unfolds like an ancient tapestry from the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the sun-drenched coastal villages of the south. The perennial rivers running down from the mountains are the lifeblood on which India has flourished. Since the first civilisations developed on the banks of the Indus River almost 5,000 years ago, India has given birth to Buddhism and Hinduism, seen the rise and fall of the Sultans and Moguls, and seen the sun finally set on the British Empire as it reclaimed independence in 1947.

The world’s largest democracy presents various religions, languages, cultural influences and monuments. This country is famed for the iconic Taj Mahal, the colourful festivals of Holi and Diwali, and traditional Carnatic and Hindustani music. Art and theatre mix traditional culture with Western influences, and Bollywood far outstrips its better-known US rival in output and popularity on its home turf.

India’s landscapes are as vast as they are varied. The peaks of the Himalayas give way to the great plains of the Ganges River and the capital, Delhi. To the west lies the Thar Desert and the Great Rann of Kutch, while the west and south coast hosts beaches, forests, and vibrant cities.

India is a feast for the senses. The air is heavy with the scent of jasmine, dancers trail frenetic melodies in colourful silk saris, and cooks compose dishes from a palette of exotic spices. India’s cities are a cacophony of seemingly endless traffic and a myriad of other textures, colours and movements all jostling for attention. India can be overwhelming, but its variety is part of its charm for those who brave the sub-continent.

Agra

The last Lodi Sultan moved his capital to Agra in 1504. Although he was defeated in 1526 by Babur, the founder of the Mogul empire, it remained India’s premier city for almost two centuries. The city’s most incredible days were during the reign of Babur’s grandson, Akbar the Great (1556-1605), who built Agra Fort, and although Shah Jahan created a new capital in Delhi, his heart remained in Agra. In 1631 he chose Agra as the spot to construct what is undisputedly the world’s greatest monument to love: the Taj Mahal.

For many, Agra represents the best and worst of India. The city is a daunting sensory experience for even the most hardened traveller: many streets are foul, the air polluted, and, particularly in the alleyways around the Taj Mahal, visitors are plagued by notoriously persistent touts and rip-off merchants. Despite all this, Agra’s magnificent sights make the adventure worthwhile.

Along with Delhi and Jaipur, Agra forms the ‘Golden Triangle’, India’s most popular tourist route. Situated just 125 miles (200km) south of Delhi, it makes an easy day trip by train. However, it is worth spending at least a night in the city to truly appreciate the wondrous Taj Mahal and its many moods; to stand in awe and watch it change from rose-pink in the morning to brilliant-white at noon to eggshell-blue at dusk.
