The Ocean State of Mind – My Incredible Experience Aboard Explora II

I’ve just returned from what can only be described as the most incredible cruise – an unforgettable journey aboard Explora II, part of the relatively new but already outstanding luxury cruise line, Explora Journeys. Despite being a newcomer to the luxury cruise market, you’d never know it once you’re onboard – the entire experience was polished, professional, and absolutely seamless.
First Impressions & Atmosphere
From the moment we stepped on board, it was clear this was something special. Explora II manages to strike the perfect balance between refined elegance and warm intimacy. It’s a smaller ship by luxury standards, which meant it never felt crowded –instead, it felt personal and relaxed, with a calm, informal-yet-formal atmosphere. We started our journey with the perfect cup coffee served in their beautiful Barista coffee lounge before moving onto the bottle of Champaign left in our cabin (along with a bottle of Red and White wine and a bottle of Gin, not to mention fully stocked mini-bar …………but we stopped at the champaign) The service was exceptional – not just efficient but heartfelt. Staff remembered our names, our favourite wine at lunch and dinner, and even took the time to stop and chat about the day’s destinations. Those little touches made us feel more like honoured guests than passengers.
Dining Like No Other
The food on board, in a word, phenomenal. Every restaurant had its own identity and
charm:
- Sakura: a serene Asian restaurant offering flavour-packed, beautifully
presented dishes. - Fil Rouge: refined French cuisine that would rival a top Parisian bistro.
- Med Yacht Club: a fresh and breezy Mediterranean menu – think olive oils,
seafood, and vibrant produce. - Marble & Co. Grill: the steak here was out of this world – perfectly cooked, high-end cuts in an elegant setting.
Even the so-called “buffet” wasn’t a buffet in the traditional sense. Everything was freshly cooked to order and genuinely 5-star restaurant quality.
Comfort & Style
The ship itself is the epitome in modern luxury – understated, stylish, and tranquil. Public areas were beautifully designed, always clean, and felt spacious even when the ship was at full capacity. (The ship can accommodate 900 guests, we had 890 on our trip) Around the pools, we never struggled to find sunbeds (the plushest I have ever seen) – even on sea days. Service was speedy, drinks flowed, and it never felt
like a hassle.
The suites? Absolutely stunning. We had an Ocean Terrace Suite, it was spacious and tastefully decorated with a large balcony complete with luxurious furniture and a sofa lounger. A walk-in wardrobe with a vanity area (hello, Dyson hairdryer!) meant getting ready for the evening was hassle free. The rainforest shower was powerful and spa-like – a rare treat at sea. The bed was dressed with Egyptian Cotton luxurious sheets, that and the lull of the sea ensured a restful nights sleep.
Nightly Entertainment
Evenings were just as magical as the days. Every night offered something new –from talented resident performers to jaw-dropping performances by singers, dancers and even a violinist who gave a modern twist to some old and not so old tunes. We were especially lucky to have West End star Jenna Lee-James on board – she performed two unforgettable shows that had the whole lounge buzzing.
Final Thoughts
This cruise truly redefined what luxury at sea means for me. From start to finish, Explora II delivered not only on elegance and service but on style and elegance. Everything felt effortless, relaxed, and deeply indulgent – a floating boutique hotel that just happens to take you to stunning places.

Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia enchants with its turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and white-sand beaches. Explore the island’s unique culture, from Bronze Age ruins to vibrant local markets. Whether you’re wandering through charming towns like Olbia or relaxing on the Costa Smeralda, Sardinia is a Mediterranean paradise.
Livorno, Italy (for Pisa & Florence)
The port city of Livorno is the gateway to two of Tuscany’s crown jewels:
- Pisa – Home to the iconic Leaning Tower and a beautiful, historic square
known as Piazza dei Miracoli. - Florence – A Renaissance masterpiece filled with world-class art,
architecture, and history, including Michelangelo’s David and the Duomo. A
