Jordan

Jordan is a destination of profound historical and natural significance. Petra, the ancient Nabataean city carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs in southern Jordan, is one of the world’s great wonders — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Approaching the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) through the narrow Siq canyon, its towering façade suddenly revealed in the morning light, is a moment of genuine awe that stays with visitors forever. The site is enormous — a full day of exploration only scratches the surface.

Wadi Rum, the vast desert valley south of Petra, is a landscape of surreal beauty: sweeping red sand plains, towering sandstone pillars and ancient rock inscriptions that speak of thousands of years of Bedouin habitation. Overnight camps in the desert — sleeping under a canopy of stars with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres — are among the most memorable experiences Jordan has to offer. Jeep tours, camel rides and sunrise hikes are all easily arranged through local Bedouin guides.

The Dead Sea on Jordan’s western border is the world’s lowest point — a surreal, hyper-saline lake where floating effortlessly is the only option. The mineral-rich black mud is legendary for its skin benefits, and the spa resorts along the Jordanian shore offer an exceptional and deeply relaxing experience.

Amman, Jordan’s modern capital, is a city of surprising vibrancy — the Rainbow Street neighbourhood, the Roman Citadel and the excellent Jordan Museum are all worth a day’s exploration. Jordan is safe, extraordinarily hospitable and genuinely rewarding. Best visited March to May or September to November when temperatures are ideal.
