Mljet

The National Park on Mljet’s western tip is the island’s defining feature and one of Croatia’s most spectacular natural environments. Within its boundaries, the saltwater lakes of Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero fill two deep valleys submerged when the Adriatic rose after the last Ice Age, creating lakes so clear and so blue that first-time visitors assume they must be fresh water. They are not: the sea enters through a narrow channel, bringing tidal rhythms and marine life to what otherwise feels like a landlocked paradise. At the centre of Veliko Jezero, an islet carries the 12th-century Benedictine monastery of St Mary — one of the most atmospherically located religious buildings in all of Europe. Boats ferry visitors across from the lakeside park centre, and the monastery’s cafe serves coffee and local wine in a setting of almost theatrical beauty. The lakes are ringed with cycling and walking paths that take two to three hours to complete and are among the most pleasurable active experiences on the Croatian coast. Beyond the national park, Mljet has a gentler, more everyday life: vineyards, olive groves, and small villages where locals have been farming and fishing for generations. Babino Polje, the island’s largest settlement, has a market, a couple of good restaurants, and almost no tourist infrastructure — which is part of its considerable appeal. The southern coast has quieter beaches and coves accessible only on foot or by boat, and the snorkelling along the rocky shoreline is outstanding. Mljet is reached by catamaran from Dubrovnik or by car ferry from the Peljšac Peninsula, making it a natural addition to any southern Dalmatian itinerary.
