Alana’s Dream Getaway: Barbados Holidays

barbados holiday review

Our Travel Consultant Alana has just returned from an unforgettable Barbados holiday — and what a trip it was. From swimming with turtles and exploring limestone caves to sipping rum cocktails by the sea, Barbados delivered everything you could wish for in a Caribbean escape. Here, Alana shares her honest review, insider tips, and personal highlights to help inspire your next getaway to this tropical paradise.

Getting There – British Airways Flights

Alana travelled to Barbados with British Airways and rated the experience a 10 out of 10. After a decade since her last BA flight, she was genuinely impressed by the improvement in service, comfort, and hospitality. Spacious seats, attentive staff, and complimentary meals and drinks — including wine and spirits — made the long journey to the Caribbean effortless.

Compared to previous experiences with other airlines, British Airways exceeded expectations. For long-haul Barbados holidays, Alana now recommends BA as one of the most comfortable and reliable ways to fly direct from the UK and Ireland.

Smooth Airport Transfers with Sun Transfers

Arriving in Barbados was seamless thanks to Sun Transfers. A friendly representative greeted Alana at Grantley Adams International Airport with a name sign, escorted her to the waiting area, and within minutes her taxi arrived. With their dedicated stand just outside the terminal, the process was quick, organised, and stress-free — exactly what you want at the start of a relaxing Barbados holiday.

Explore the Island – Rent a Car

Alana’s top travel tip for Barbados is simple: rent a car for at least a few days. The island might be small, but it’s packed with hidden beaches, scenic drives, and colourful fishing villages waiting to be discovered. Having your own car means you can explore at your own pace — from the dramatic surf at Bathsheba on the east coast to the vibrant streets of Bridgetown and the chic west coast beaches lined with palm trees and beach bars.

Driving in Barbados is straightforward, and the freedom it gives you adds a whole new dimension to your holiday.

Where to Stay – Radisson Aquatica Resort Barbados

Alana stayed at the Radisson Aquatica Resort Barbados, located on the stunning Carlisle Bay. Her Ocean View Double Room looked directly over the turquoise Caribbean Sea — the perfect setting for a peaceful Barbados holiday. From arrival, the warm welcome set the tone, complete with a refreshing rum punch and genuine smiles.

What stood out most was the service. Every staff member, from reception and housekeeping to the beach team and bartenders, went above and beyond. “We’ve made friends for life here,” Alana said.

Guests can dine beachside at Neptune’s Grill, where delicious seafood and tropical cocktails are served right to your sun lounger. Early risers are treated to one of the island’s most unique experiences — racehorses swimming in the sea each morning between 6 and 8 a.m. It’s a beautiful local tradition that perfectly captures the charm of Barbados.

When to go on Barbados Holidays

Alana travelled during the off-peak hurricane season and still enjoyed perfect weather every day. Barbados benefits from a warm, tropical climate year-round, with average highs around 30°C. The only thing to note is that some restaurants and attractions close on Sundays and Mondays, so plan your excursions and dining in advance.

Room-Only or All-Inclusive?

While many travellers book all-inclusive Barbados holidays, Alana opted for a room-only stay — and highly recommends it. Barbados has an incredible dining scene, with beach bars, seafood shacks, and fine dining restaurants that offer far more variety and value than most hotel restaurants.

“All-inclusive hotels are lovely,” she explained, “but they often only have two or three restaurants, and most couples we met still went out for dinner. Room-only gives you freedom and better value — plus the chance to try authentic Bajan cuisine.”

Harrison’s Cave and Monkey Feeding Tour (Viator – €135pp)
This six-hour island adventure combines history, wildlife, and stunning scenery. The 40-minute tram tour through Harrison’s Cave reveals underground waterfalls and limestone formations, followed by monkey feeding at the Eco Adventure Park and a stop at Bathsheba Beach for lunch. It’s a must for first-time visitors to Barbados.

Barbados Glass Bottom Boat Cruise and Snorkelling (Viator – €35pp)
A 75-minute cruise offering a full hour of snorkelling, swimming with sea turtles, and exploring three historic shipwrecks. It’s one of the most popular excursions in Barbados — and for good reason. “Every couple at our hotel raved about it,” said Alana.

You can also rent snorkelling gear locally for around 30 BBD (€12) for four hours, and friendly locals are often happy to offer advice or discounts.

Dining and Budget Tips for Barbados Holidays

Barbados holidays may have a reputation for luxury, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Alana and her travel companion spent around 150 BBD (€63) for two mains, starters, and drinks — excellent value compared to dining in Dublin. From local beach cafés to high-end restaurants, Barbados offers options for every taste and budget.

Tip: Try authentic Bajan dishes like flying fish, macaroni pie, and cou-cou for a true taste of the island.
